Borrowdale
is one of the best places in the country for outdoor
activities including walking, climbing, mountain
biking, sailing, canoeing, wind surfing & Paragliding,
to name but a few! Indeed the sport of rock climbing
spent its infancy on the crags of Borrowdale with
the first routes being put up in the 1890's, since
then development has continued apace with Borrowdale
now boasting hundreds of climbs, from beginners
routes to the more cutting edge extreme routes of
today. For those who like a more leisurely pace
then there is fishing or birdwatching, and beautiful
scenery to photograph, paint - or to simply enjoy!
There
are many walks straight from the front door, including
the popular Catbells with amazing views from the
top over Derwentwater and the Newlands valley. Skiddaw
and the other highest mountains in England (Helvellyn,
Great Gable and Scafell) are close by for the more
adventurous. Plus many less strenuous walks around
the valley to enjoy with plenty of lovely views
to take in. For a lazy day walk to the shore of
Derwentwater (1 1/2 miles),
then pick up a launch, relax and have a trip round
the lake. For more information on local walks please

You
can even stop on route at the historical market
town of Keswick for a browse around its many shops.
Also a regular bus service from Keswick on the opened
top Borrowdale bus. Fishing licences and permits
are available from the Keswick Tourist Information
Centre. Keswick's brand new Theatre
by the Lake is ideally situated close to Derwentwater.
The Theatre offers a programme of arts and entertainment
throughout the year. There is a coffee shop and
fully licensed bars. Tickets and information on
017687 74411.
Fulfilling its role as a popular holiday destination,
Keswick offers a range of pubs, restaurants and
clubs for those who desire them. There is a cinema
which shows the latest films and, of course, the
Theatre. For lovers of local scenery there are regular
slide shows by local photographers, mountain guides
and climbers.
